How Our Process Work (Detailed)

Step 1: Request Your Estimate

Every project with Midwest Neighborhood Builders starts the same way—with a simple estimate request. You share a few details about your kitchen, bathroom, accessibility needs, basement, or other home updates so we can understand the space and your goals.

What you do:

Choose the estimate form that best matches your project (kitchen, bathroom, or accessibility & home updates).

Tell us what isn’t working and what you’d like to change.

Upload photos if you have them—phone pictures work great.

What we do:

Review your information and photos.

Confirm that your home is within our service areas around Grand Rapids or Detroit.

Reach out by phone or email to schedule an on-site visit if your project is a good fit.

Step 2: On-Site Visit & Project Review

Next, we come out to see your home in person. This visit is all about understanding how you use the space today and what you want it to do for you in the future.

During the visit, we typically:

Take measurements and look at existing conditions.

Talk through how you use the space day-to-day.

Discuss layout options, possible challenges, and accessibility needs if that’s part of the project.

Ask about your budget range and timeline so our proposal is realistic.

For accessibility-focused projects:

We pay close attention to things like doorway widths, step heights, clearances, and how easy it is to move between rooms, then discuss options that can make everyday life easier and safer.

Step 3: Detailed Written Proposal

After the visit, we put together a written proposal that explains what we recommend and what it will take to get there.

Your proposal may include:

A clear description of the work to be done (scope).

Notes about layout changes, accessibility upgrades, and any repairs involved.

Expected timeline once work begins.

Pricing broken out by major parts of the project (labor and key materials).

Any assumptions or options that could affect final cost (for example, different material choices).

You can review this proposal on your own time. If something doesn’t make sense, we’ll walk you through it—no pressure and no hard sales pitch.

Step 4: Planning, Selections & Scheduling

Once you approve the proposal, we move into the planning stage. This is where we finalize details so the build goes as smoothly as possible.

Typical planning items:

Confirming cabinet, countertop, flooring, tile, and fixture choices.

Finalizing accessibility details like grab bar locations, shower style, or ramp design.

Coordinating with any needed trades (plumbing, electrical, etc.).

Pulling permits when required and aligning with local inspection requirements.

Reviewing the approximate start date and project timeline with you.

We’ll also discuss how the project will affect your daily routine—especially for kitchen, bathroom, and accessibility work—so you know what to expect.

Step 5: Build, Communicate & Adjust as Needed

When work begins, you’ll see Midwest Neighborhood Builders’ crew and trade partners in action. Our goal is to do high-quality work while respecting your home and your time.

During the build phase, we:

Protect floors and surrounding areas as much as the project allows.

Follow the agreed scope and update you if we uncover hidden issues that need attention.

Coordinate inspections when required.

Keep you informed about progress, upcoming steps, and any decisions we need from you.

For accessibility and safety-focused projects:

We regularly check clearances, transitions, and other details so the finished space is not only updated, but also easier and safer to use.

Step 6: Final Walkthrough & Ongoing Support

When the work is substantially complete, we’ll walk the space with you to make sure everything matches the agreed plan.

During the final walkthrough, we:

Review the completed work together.

Note any small touch-ups or adjustments that need to be made.

Answer questions about caring for new surfaces, fixtures, and finishes.

Talk about any next phases if you’re planning more work in the future.

Even after the project wraps up, you’ll know who to call if you have questions about the work we completed.

What Types of Projects Are a Good Fit for MWNB?

Projects that are usually a good fit:

Midwest Neighborhood Builders focuses on remodels and larger interior projects, not quick one-off handyman visits.

Full kitchen remodels or significant kitchen updates

Bathroom remodels, including accessibility-focused updates

Accessibility and safety upgrades that require thoughtful planning (curbless showers, ramps, wider doors, etc.)

Multi-room projects that coordinate several changes at once

Projects that are usually not a fit:

Single small repairs (for example, changing one light fixture or patching a tiny nail hole)

Work that only involves cleaning or basic maintenance

Emergency service calls

If you’re not sure whether your project is a fit, you can still reach out—we’ll let you know either way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Process

Do you charge for estimates?

Estimates are free for most homeowners in our service areas around Grand Rapids and Detroit. If you’re outside those areas or have a very complex project, we’ll let you know upfront if any consultation fees apply.

How long does a typical remodel take?

Timelines vary by project. Smaller bathroom updates might take a couple of weeks once work begins, while larger kitchen or multi-room remodels can take several weeks. After we review your project and create a proposal, we’ll give you a more specific schedule based on your scope and material choices.

Do I need to move out during the project?

Most homeowners stay in their homes during kitchen, bathroom, and accessibility projects. There may be short periods where certain rooms are unavailable, but we’ll talk through those details and help you plan around them before work starts.

How do payments work?

Payment schedules depend on the size of the project. Typically, there is an initial deposit to reserve your spot on the schedule, followed by one or more progress payments, and a final payment once the project is substantially complete. Your proposal will outline the payment structure before you sign.

Can you help me decide between different options or layouts?

Yes. Part of our process is helping you understand the pros and cons of different layouts, materials, and accessibility choices—so you can make decisions that fit your budget and how you actually live in your home.
