Accessibility remodeling isn’t about turning your house into a hospital—it’s about thoughtful changes that make your home easier and safer to use every day. We look at how you (or a family member) move through the space now, where the trouble spots are, and what changes would make the biggest difference.
Examples of goals we design for:
Making it easier to get in and out of the shower or tub
Reducing fall risks on stairs, in bathrooms, and at entries
Improving movement with walkers, wheelchairs, or power chairs
Creating main-floor living setups so you can use stairs less
Making lighting, controls, and storage easier to reach
Every situation is different, but many homes benefit from similar types of updates. We customize the work to your layout, your needs, and your budget.
Safer bathrooms: Add grab bars, improve shower and tub access, update flooring to more slip-resistant options, adjust vanity heights, and improve lighting and ventilation.
Curbless / low-threshold showers: Replace traditional tubs or high-step showers with curbless or low-threshold designs that are easier to enter and exit, often paired with handheld showerheads and sturdy seating options.
Accessibility-minded kitchen updates: Adjust layouts, clearances, and storage so it’s easier to move through the space, reach everyday items, and work at counters—especially when mobility is limited.
Ramps, steps & railings at entries: Add or improve ramps, landings, and handrails at doors and steps to reduce fall risk and make it easier to enter and exit the home.
Wider doorways & improved circulation: Widen doorways where feasible and clear pathways so walkers, wheelchairs, and power chairs can move more comfortably between rooms.
Lighting & control improvements: Add better lighting in key areas, improve switch placement, and make everyday controls easier to access and use.
You don’t have to know exactly which of these you need—sharing the problem areas is enough to start.
Accessibility and aging-in-place remodeling can help in many situations, including:
Homeowners planning ahead so they can stay in their homes as long as possible
People recovering from injury or surgery who now use a walker, cane, or chair
Anyone who feels like their home has become harder or less safe to use
Families updating a home for an aging parent or relative
You don’t need to have a “perfect plan” before contacting us. If you can describe what’s hard to do in the home right now, we can help you explore options.
Accessibility work isn’t just about checking boxes—it’s about how you live in and move through your home day to day. Midwest Neighborhood Builders:
Looks at real-life movement through entries, halls, bathrooms, and key rooms
Considers clearances, transitions, and reach in planning layouts
Uses ADA-informed best practices as a guide, then adapts them to your specific home
Balances safety, comfort, and appearance so the space still feels like your home

We’re not a medical provider and we don’t replace professional medical or therapy guidance—but we can build practical changes into your home that make everyday tasks easier.
Accessibility work isn’t just about checking boxes—it’s about how you live in and move through your home day to day. Midwest Neighborhood Builders:
You tell us who the project is for, what’s hard to do in the home right now, and which areas are most urgent (bathroom, steps, bedroom, etc.). Photos are helpful but not required.
We walk the space with you, look at entries, halls, bathrooms, and other key areas, and talk through options that fit your home’s structure and your budget.
You receive a written proposal that outlines recommended changes, scope of work, and pricing. If there are multiple ways to address an issue (like a tub-to-shower conversion vs. a different layout), we’ll explain the pros and cons.
Together we decide which changes to move forward with now, confirm fixture and material choices, and schedule the work.
We complete the agreed work, keep you informed as we go, and coordinate any needed inspections or trade partners.
After the work is substantially complete, we walk the space with you and make note of any final adjustments or touch-ups.

Accessibility and aging-in-place updates often interact with local building codes and insurance coverage, especially when walls, plumbing, or structural elements are involved.
We follow local building codes and permitting requirements for the work we perform.
Coverage for accessibility-related changes or any future damage is handled by your insurance company, not by us.
Before starting major projects—especially in basements or areas with past water issues—it’s wise to talk with your insurance agent about how your policy treats those spaces.
Midwest Neighborhood Builders does not provide legal or insurance advice and can’t guarantee how any particular policy will respond, but we can describe our scope of work to your agent if they have questions.
We focus on projects with meaningful impact, not one-off repairs.

Emergency-only response or insurance-claim management
If you’re not sure whether your project is the right size, you can still reach out—we’ll let you know if it’s a fit or point you in a better direction.

Not sure if you’re in our service area?
No. You can start by simply telling us what’s hard to do in the home right now—like getting into the shower, using the stairs, or moving through doorways. If you have recommendations from a medical professional or therapist, we’re happy to consider those as we plan the work.
In many cases, yes. Sometimes targeted changes—like improving shower access, adding grab bars, changing flooring, or adjusting fixtures—can make a big difference without redoing everything. We’ll look at the space and talk through levels of options.
No. Many products and layouts are designed to be both safer and more attractive now. Our goal is to help your home feel like your home—just easier and safer to use.
It depends entirely on your policy and situation. Some policies or programs may offer help for certain changes, and others may not. We can’t promise coverage or speak for your insurer, so it’s important to talk with your insurance agent about what may or may not be covered.
Absolutely. Planning ahead is often the best time to do accessibility and aging-in-place work. It gives you more options and lets us phase the project in ways that fit your timeline and budget.
